Essure Problems: The Permanent Contraceptive Implant
Since Essure was approved for the market in 2002, the number of cases regarding severe complications has continued to grow at alarming rates. Women who received the permanent birth control implant reported immediate problems, as well as persistent and continuing side effects. More serious problems related to the medical device include unwanted pregnancies, fetal deaths, heavy menstrual flow, pain during intercourse, sever abdominal pain, hair loss, back pain, and swelling. In many instances, the injuries sustained were so serious that hysterectomies had to be performed.
Further investigation into the device has been issued by The Food And Drug Administration to Bayer, the manufacturer of the Essure device, to review the safety risks and create new objective data.
Immediate Essure Problems
The most common Essure-related side effect is pain during and immediately after the procedure. Most pain from the procedure went away within the first week after insertion. Other problems during the insertion period included coil expulsion, uterine/tubal perforations, and coil migration (coils found in ‘other’ locations after insertion).
On the day of the procedure patients reported experiencing a variety of immediate side effects. The most common side effects reported were:
- Cramping
- Pain
- Nausea/Vomiting
- Dizziness/Light-headedness
- Bleeding/Spotting
Persistent & Continuing Essure Side Effects
The same study that followed the women referenced in the above data, met back with these women a year after their procedure. The study found that not all problems present during the period of insertion had vanished. Among the side effects reported at the one year mark were:
- Back pain/low back pain
- Abdominal pain
- Pain during intercourse
- Severe menstrual cramps
- Severe pelvic and/or abdominal pain
Bayer and Essure
The law offices of Unglesby + Williams is fighting to prove that Bayer used falsified data to receive FDA approval by under-reporting the number of cases involving serious problems. Essure promises on their website that the product is safe, that most women go home within 45 minutes of getting the procedure, and return to their normal lifestyle a day or two after the procedure. To leave a product on the market that has been at fault for such a number of horrific outcomes is not fair to women around the world. Given that this device has been on the market for 10 years, it’s time for a change.
